Reg Killingley, reflecting that much can be learned from the symbolism of leavening and unleavened bread, suggests that unleavened bread pictures the tight-knit unity we have with others in the body of Christ. The Passover season also focuses on Jesus Christ's resurrection, making it possible for the rest of the first fruits to be resurrected. In this context, we want the Bread of Life to “rise.” As the repentant Publican, we receive justification as we humbly confess and forsake our sins, putting to death the old man, metaphorically carrying our cross, entering by the narrow gate, actively doing the will of God. If we ask God for His free gift of forgiveness, we are obligated to forgive others. The cost of discipleship is high. It is not enough to proclaim Jesus as our Savior; we must follow Him 52 weeks of the year.
