Joe Weicks, reflecting on a trying time in the American Revolution, a grim time when General Washington expressed reservations about the ultimate success of the conflict, suggests that before the American soldiers launched the do or die crossing of the Delware River, Washington ordered his commanders to read to the troops Thomas Paine’s essay The American Crisis, a document which placed the proper price on freedom in the minds of American soldiers, encouraging firmness and resolve in the face of uncertainty. Similarly, Paul, writing from prison, had to encourage Timothy to endure hardness as a good soldier. We also need to be good soldiers of Jesus Christ, enduring hardship, fighting the good fight in all circumstances. When we turn our lives over to Jesus Christ, we are not called to “Hot Tub Christianity,” but instead to endure hardship similar to the Continental Army at Valley Forge who faced grave dangers and deprivation, inspired by the example of General Washington. We need to submit to our Commander Jesus Christ in the same manner, enduring our particular “thorn in the flesh” as a good soldier, relying on His grace, willing to endure hardship and suffering. Like the apostle Paul, our credentials should have a significant measure of affliction and suffering, the lot of a soldier of Christ who has fought the good fight.
