Luke Przeslawski, recounting Jacob’s wrestling match, suggested that up to this point Jacob had been characterized as a cunning deceiver, but after God touched his hip socket, Jacob received his calling, forcing himself to be honest and truthful. Job, a blameless and upright man, nevertheless discovered his self-righteous blindspot when Elihu gave his admonition. God takes four chapters to dissolve this self-deception, after which Job sees clearly, leading him to repent in dust and ashes. All of our righteousness to God is as dirty laundry. We go through levels of repentence: (1) being sorry for what we have done, (2) being sorry for what we are, and (3) being convicted that we must absolutely partner with Jesus Christ. Like Saul of Tarsus, we must become aware of our spiritual blindspots and blindness, allowing Jesus Christ to remove them. Nobody can be justified apart from Jesus Christ. Blameless and upright * Christ knocking at the door * Dirty laundry * Elihu * Filthy rags * Humbling oneself * Isaiah 64:6 * Jacob’s wrestling match * Job * Needing a physician * Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican * Pharisee * Repent in dust and ashes * Saul of Tarsus * Self-perfection * Self-righteousness * Tax collectors and prostitutes * Trusting in self |
