Dave Havir, reflecting that our lives need to reflect positive motivation, reminds us that God loves a cheerful giver. When we pay taxes or tribute, it is hard to warm up to that admonition. Scriptures suggest that we are to pay taxes, even though the entire system is hopelessly corrupt. We ought to pray for our leaders, but not for their corrupt policies. Regarding welfare or charity, “within your gates” seems to refer to the local community and voluntary contributions. Confiscatory taxing for the sake of welfare takes out the willingness of the heart and does not amount to charity at all. The concept of “within your gates” suggests that we take care of our own. Though the early apostolic church experimented with a type of collectivism, it is certainly not the style now. If the economy tanks because of the failed economic policies of the present administration, we may have to resort to this economic system again. When things get tough, we need to toughen up, determined to be cheerful givers no matter what the economic conditions.
