Bernie Monsalvo, marking 49 days to count to Pentecost, reminds us that Pentecost is the only holy day which doesn’t have a fixed date, but one we are obligated to calculate anew every year, counting 50 days (or seven complete weeks) from the day after the Sabbath, beginning with the Sunday in which we make the wave sheaf offering. Pentecost is the Feast of the Fifteeth Day, the day God would send His Holy Spirit. We show our love for God the Father and Jesus Christ by keeping His commandments, a task aided by the gift of the Comforter- or the Spirit of God.As heirs of salvation, we need help to keep His commandments. Though we don’t have Christ in the flesh guiding us, we do have Him in the Spirit, guiding us and convicting us, empowering us to do His will. The Helper was sent on the Day of Pentecost. We must remember that God will not sanctify any day we choose. Because the disciples faithfully counted the days to Pentecost, God gave them special power to speak in different languages, reaching multiple peoples. We have this same access to God’s power as the early disciples. Many of us are sitting on acres of gold, metaphorically, and don’t know it. We must put God’s Holy Spirit in us to good use.
