Stan West, citing I Thesalonians 4:19, referring to God's Holy Spirit, suggests that when one has God's Spirit within him, fruits should be evident. When a congregation has God's Spirit, a special spirit should be exuded. Thirty nine years ago, this nation had a purer spirit than it does now. When Apollo 13 had grave problems, President Nixon appealed to the entire nation to go to God in prayer, interceding for our astronauts. When nations have turned to God in the past, God has intervened for them. Today, Satan has an all out program to quench God's Spirit. Four conditions will quench the Spirit: (1) excessive worry—we need to live in day-tight compartments, not worrying about tomorrow; (2) excessive fear of the weather, economic conditions, political upheaval, and religious persecution. We need to replace the fear of man with the fear of God; (3) excessive doubt—as characterized in the episode of Thomas, and (4) excessive reliance on human reason, as exemplified by the leavening of the Pharisees. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed Nego succesfully battled these four spirit-quenching conditions in the fiery furnace episode. We need to be perpetually on guard against these four pernicious conditions.
