Stan West, citing Proverbs 16:31 referring to gray hair as a blessing, suggests that it is indeed a blessing because it signifies one has reached a long age. An overseer in the biblical parlance is synoymous with elder, connoting one who is older and has experienced a full and abundant life. Moses, as well as the apostle Paul, did not commence his purposeful teaching until he was well along in years. The elderly among the congregation are treasure houses of wisdom and should be tapped for their knowledge and experience. Joshua, starting as a slave in Egypt, lived a long and eventful life before he became the leader of Israel. People who have been on their spiritual pilgrimage longer than we have are valuable resources of information and insights we can use for our journey. Rehoboam’s reign could have been more succesful if he had heeded the advice of the elders instead of the young inexperienced men. We should not ignore advice from people who know that history repeats itself. Let us not forsake fellowship with those who are more experienced. |
