Dave Havir, continuing on the subject of evil, focuses upon recognizing and dealing with the evil within us. We must always take responsibility for our own carnality, realizing that it is presumptuous to criticize others. We must bring our own sins under control. Many religions suggest that if they are ‘born again’ they no longer have sin within them. Obviously, the apostle Paul in Romans 7 had to battle mightily against his carnal nature and malignant sin. We would be deeply shamed if the worst thing in our lives were made known to all. In the flesh, we are a mixture of good and evil, growing incrementally into holiness with the aid of God’s Holy Spirit containing the mind of Christ, enabling us to repent and discard the guilt which pulls us down. Though we have escaped corruption or pollution, it is possible to become entangled in sin like a pig wallowing in muck. Because we are not immune from sin, we must present ourselves as a living sacrifice, continually stirring up God’s Holy Spirit within us, continually looking at our spiritual goal. We need to learn to abhor the evil within us and actively change the ancillary habits or behaviors which lead to sin, overcoming evil with good on a daily basis.
