Reg Killingley, reflecting on some observations of a colleague, a bi-lingual teacher from Spain who considers Americans extremely friendly and helpful, thought it would be appropriate to share those insights near July 4th. The sermon then takes a turn, while he reflects on his experiences working with third graders, prompting the question, “Are you smarter than a third grader?’ On the positive side of the ledger, third graders seemingly have no guile, no need to cover anything up, but demonstrate honesty and transparency. On the negative side, third graders seldom take responsibility for mistakes they make, but will blame others. Some of us have never outgrown this tendency to blame others, refusing to take responsibility for our own mistakes. Our parents Adam and Eve and our sibling Cain were quick to blame others, taking no responsibility for their own misbehaviors, and kvetching about the negative consequences, whining “This is so unfair.” If we do not accept responsibility, we will never have the motivation to change. David had blind spots about his own sinful behavior until Nathan told a story about someone else. This inability to accept responsibility seems to be a universal trait of human nature. When G.K. Chesterton was asked to write as essay on the topic, “What’s wrong with the world?” he responded, “I am.” All of us are the problem. We need to repent of our part of the problem and move on. If we can do that, we are smarter than a third grader. Accepting responsibility * Adam and Eve * Adam’s bed time stories * Are you smarter than a fifth grader? * Beam in our own eye * Blame game * Blaming others * Blind spot * Cain and Abel * Developmental stage * Do not blame Eve’s bed time stories * Fourth of July * Genesis 3 * George Bernard Shaw * Gilbert Keith Chesterton * Kick all the bums out * Nathan and David * Neil McIver * Pharisee and Publican * Planks and specks * Psalm 51 * Taking responsibility * That’s not my responsibility * Thieves respect property * What’s wrong with the world? |
