Rex Jamerson, reflecting on a friend’s untimely accident and extreme suffering from having endured a double amputation, observes that it sometimes takes an incident like this to inspire fervent prayer. Why do we have to go through severe trials in order to respond in prayer? The greatest miracle of all is not a physical healing, but a spiritual miracle of conversion and preparation for God’s family. Like Lance Armstrong’s training to participate in the Tour de France, we have to go through some grueling training. God does not want to take the chance on unleashing 144,000 ‘Lucifers’ lose on the universe. He wants to know that we have been thoroughly proved. As we yield to our physical father’s discipline, we also need to yield to the discipline of our Heavenly Father. While the blinded Samson, his hair growing slowly back, was grinding grain for the Philistines, he may have focused 100% on repentance and spiritual growth. Like Samson, we need to be thankful to have our sins and transgressions forgiven. We need to remember that trials are an essential part of our spiritual growth and that God will never leave us to be crushed by them.
