Bernie Monsalvo, acknowledging that we align ourselves to God’s calendar, focuses upon the significance of the upcoming Feast of Trumpets. The previous events and feasts are firmly rooted in concrete historical events, but the Feast of Trumpets is something of an anomaly, not anchored to a particular historical event, seemingly a day of new beginnings, the day that Ezra read out of the book of the law from morning unto midday on Yom Teruah (day of blowing—connected to Rosh Hashanah–the head of the year in the Jewish secular calendar), observed in the seventh month. The episode in Exodus 19:16 in which a trumpet blast was sounded by an angel with powerful lungs (causing a lot of trembling within the camp of Israel) anticipates or prefigures a time God will dramatically reveal Himself to us. The sons of Aaron would blow a trumpet signaling the approach of the new moon, the full moon, and the solemn feast days. Trumpets were used to convey alarm of impending war as well as other ceremonial uses. The episode of the eruption of Mount St. Helens flattening the trees and spewing out volcanic lava is insignificant when we compare it to the sound of God’s voice, the sound of a great trumpet.
