J.L. Roden, referring to the descendants of Japheth (or Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38-39, as well as Revelation 20), focuses on their identity. Gomer’s descendents became the Samarians; Javan’s descendents became the Greeks; Madai’s descendents became the Medes and Persians; Magog refers to a barbarous northern nation; Tubal’s descendants became the Russians; and Japheth, though having the least exposure in biblical narrative, has no less than 14 sons spreading the dynasty to northeast Eurasia. We learn from Ezekiel that the sons of Japheth were involved in the slave trade. Haley’s Bible Handbook referred to them as rogue or “bandit nations” living north of the Caucuses around the Black Sea region, sometimes confused with the Scythians, some of which were part of the ten northern tribes of Israel. Before the Millennium, the Russians and the Persians will evidently be aligned against Israel and Judah. After the Millennium, during which population will increase exponentially, the offspring of Japheth (Gog and Magog) evidently will not have submitted to God and will serve as God’s tool once more—demonstrating once and for all that no power is superior to God’s. God’s called out ones resurrected at the first resurrection will have the opportunity to see these events unfold.
