Jim OBrien, asking the audience what initially attracted them to the Church of God, elicited the responses such as prophecy, the Sabbath, the plan of God, and the World Tomorrow. Actually, the most thrilling aspect about coming into the Church of God is to be set free of the shackles of sin and slavery. In ancient Egypt there was no concept of liberty; Pharaoh was an absolute despot. The founding principle of the founding of America was that liberty was a right derived from God and that we are all equal under the law. No man is above the law; all are required to keep the law. Evil men attempt to enslave people; good men make men free, as exemplified by Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, evoking the turn of phrase and principles of the Bible. The Declaration of Independence, founded on biblical principles acknowledges liberty as an inalienable right, dedicated to the equality of all men under the law. In independent congregations of the Church of God, we are free to live under the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit, set free of bondage to ecclesiastical despotism, coercion, and control. Liberty is a somber responsibility, sometimes paid for by blood. We have an obligation to those who follow us by following the example of Jesus Christ, willing to sacrifice our lives for freedom.
