Dave Havir, reflecting on the sovereignty of God, advances three theories about the terrorist attack on 9-11, suggesting that some feel that (1) God planned those terrorist attacks, while others feel that (2) God allowed Satan to plan the attack, while others feel that God allowed Satan and man to plan those attacks according to time and chance. The first theory suggests that God micro-manages human affairs, somewhat corroborated by events in the scripture such as the plagues of Egypt, the birth of Jesus Christ, or the split between Israel and Judah, the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, as well as the slaying of Anaias and Sapphira. The second theory is somewhat corroborated by the trial of Job, in which God allowed Satan to torment Job for a specific purpose. The demise of Ahab was purposed by God, but carried out by an angelic messenger. The carnage of Armageddon was purposed by God, but carried out by demonic principalities. Sometimes God allows an event to occur for a specific purpose. At other times, God allows for time and chance to occur—such as tornadoes, floods, fires, and hurricanes—hitting evil and good alike. Sometimes God does not intervene for us as quickly as we would like. Bad things happen to good people. Sometimes people can be at the right place at the wrong time, such as the church massacre in Wisconsin or some of the passengers that crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers. God could use any one of these theories, but it does not take away the sovereignty of God. We need to thank God for the hedge around us, realizing that things could get a whole lot worse. No matter what theory we believe, God is sovereign.
