David Maas, focusing on the promised rest in Hebrews 4:1, asks whether this rest, whatever it is, will it be available to us right now as we struggle individually and collectively on our spiritual pilgrimages to the Promised Land or is it something we will have to wait for until the Millennium? Although the full measure of the rest God promises to us will accrue to us at our glorification, we can experience it right now incrementally as we make our spiritual journey, enabling us to cushion ourselves against the horrendous trials that are occurring to the descendants of Jacob. As a major component of this new covenant, God has promised to place His laws in the inner recesses of our minds and hearts, in order that at our glorification we will be totally composed of God’s Holy Spirit. As we exercise the gift of the Holy Spirit, we acquiesce to God’s law and enjoy its benefits. We, along with the Psalmist David, receive the absolute peace of mind and sense of well being in yielding to God. This profound peace of mind, which Paul earlier described as the peace of God which passes all understanding, can and should be sought after by all of God’s offspring currently undergoing the sanctifying process. The rest then refers to a committed state of mind that takes place on the inside involving voluntary yielding to God’s shaping power and His holy spiritual law from what we will be totally composed when we achieve our glorified state.
