Dave Havir, asking us why we are fasting today, counsels us not to fast for a negative motivation, such as fear of being “cut off” from our brethren or “cut off” from God. In the history of the Old Testament, the tabernacle was the location to meet God. The Day of Atonement was considered the most holy time of the year, a time when the priest would approach God on behalf of the people to make a sacrifice for sin. In Hebrews, we learn that Jesus Christ, our High Priest has accomplished this task for our atonement, going into the heavenly tabernacle on our behalf, enabling us to be reconciled with God the Father. This day pictures that pivotal event as well as the time the Devil would be cast down by the power God gave to Christ to put down all worldly powers, including death. God also gave power to angels to subdue evil, and He also gives power to His saints to cast out Satan. God gives human beings the gift of life with the spirit in man with the capability to interface with His Holy Spirit. The more we are plugged into God, the more power we will accrue, power to serve other people and to resist Satan. Fasting is a tool for increasing our spiritual power to resist evil, indicating that we have totally surrendered to God becoming a valuable tool in His hand.
