Stan West, reflecting on the iconic significance of the Liberty Bell, suggested that the inscription from Leviticus 25:10-11(ushering in the time of Jubilee) serves as an appropriate emblem of the ideal of freedom and independence from bondage and slavery. A major theme of The Day of Atonement is a release from the bondage of sin, made possible by the shed blood of Jesus Christ and the binding of Satan. The Day of Atonement represents freedom and liberty made possible by the sacrifice and suffering of someone. Even the symbol of freedom, the Liberty Bell, has had its share of cracking and re-smelting, a metaphorical picture of suffering. The law was given from Mount Sinai to show the way to freedom, but the breaking of the law put cracks in the Covenant, depriving Israel of their freedom. Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have been cleansed, purified, and freed from our sins, having become reconciled to and at peace with God. By Christ’s atoning blood we are redeemed and saved. After we are reconciled with God, we should seek to be reconciled with one another.
