Stan West, cuing in on James 1:27, endeavors to provide a behaviorally stated definition for true worship: to visit the fatherless and the widows and to keep oneself unspotted from the world, an activity far superior to ritual and elaborate liturgy. James commends the doers of the law. Partial or selective obedience designates a deficiency in true worship, equating with false worship. Not having mercy and not controlling the tongue also describes a deficit in true worship. Both Paul and James recognized that works and faith support each other. False earthly wisdom, motivated by envy and covetousness, militate against effective worship. Friendship with the world is incompatible with true worship. Pride and double-mindedness cannot co-exist with true worship. Our current political leaders are hypocritically double-minded. James reminds us that we have a responsibility to act charitably to those less fortunate. When we subtract the condemnations from the assertions of James, we have the formula for true religion.

Blessings and curses * Bondage to sin * Dead faith * Double-minded * Elected leaders * Envy * “Epistle of straw” * Favoritism * Friendship with the world * Law of God * Inactive faith * James * Martin Luther * Mercy * Oppressing the poor * Overcoming * Respecter of persons * Salt spring * Strife * Suffering * True religion * Uncontrolled tongue * Worship
