Stan West indicates that Malachi is a transitional book marking 400 years of silence between the Old and New Testament periods, a time the priesthood had become corrupt, intermarriage with pagan culture had become commonplace, and divorce had become rampant, not unlike today. Malachi actually means “messenger” or “my messenger.” The first messenger was Malachi the prophet. The second messengers, the priests, were from the family of Levi, designated to turn the people away from iniquity. But they had corrupted themselves, as have some of the TV evangelists and politicians today, calling good evil and evil good. The third messenger was the prophesied John the Baptist, who was to prepare the way for Jesus Christ. The fourth messenger was the Messenger of the Covenant, or Jesus Christ, who will come to his Temple (both physical and spiritual), cleansing it with zeal. The fifth messenger (another Elijah the prophet), who would come before the great and dreadful Day of the Lord, continues to be an object of much speculation. This messenger will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children toward their fathers, saving the world from oblivion.
