Neil McIver, asking us to imagine we are farmers having fertile land with a choice to plant corn or poisonous nightshade, reminds us that our fertile imaginations (or our heart) are just as receptive and undiscerning as a fertile piece of ground. Whatever we sow, we will assuredly reap. If we stay in God’s presence, we will maintain a purity of heart. We dare not, as the ancient Israelites in Exodus 32, remake God in our own imaginations (perhaps in our own image), a less threatening god who would tolerate their sins and shortcomings. To be fully in the presence of God is to be aware of His righteousness, a righteousness that cannot tolerate impurity of heart. Our outer righteousness must emanate from the inside, having no divided loyalties, motivated by a love for God and our neighbors. We must give up the secret and presumptuous sins which divide and defile our hearts. Without purity of heart and holiness, we cannot enter the presence of God. Thankfully, because of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, we can enter God’s presence if we are willing to be conformed in His image and character. We need to be living in His presence 24/7.
