Stan West, using the legal analogy of a flight risk or bail jumper, asks us whether we might be considered a spiritual or moral flight risk, such as Jonah when he tried to escape his responsibility. In Jonah, though we do not learn a great deal of prophecy, we do learn much about human nature through Jonah’s behavior and we learn much more about God’s sovereignty. After the pagan mariners saw how the sea calmed after Jonah was thrown overboard, they started to fear the true God. Jonah’s prayer indicates that he also truly feared the true God, feeling compelled to obey, though not from his own volition. Jonah was not happy about Nineveh being spared. Through Jonah’s forced preaching, the people of Nineveh repented and feared God, leading God to change His mind. God’s kindness to the ‘enemy’ made Jonah angry and bitter, causing him to do nothing. We learn much about the resentfulness of human nature and the forgiveness of God through the book of Jonah. We need to learn from the book of Jonah, not wanting to be walking contradictions, assenting to God’s will, but resenting His mercy on others. God is love; we need to have this attribute also. Those who jump bail will be caught in the spiritual Yamboree.
