Dave Havir, insisting that God judges us on the basis of what is true and what we know of this truth, suggests that we all have definite areas of denial. We have no trouble seeing faults in others, but we have extreme difficulty unearthing them in ourselves. To reverse this denial: (1) Ask God and other people (as a kind of peer review) to help us see ourselves (Jeremiah 10:3-4, Proverbs 27:17). (2) Listen to or hear unsolicited criticism about ourselves, realizing that some of it may be accurate while some of it may be way off the mark. Hearing criticism and responding will help our repentance and spiritual growth. (3) Learn from experience, as did Saul before he became Paul, and Job, as he was taken from his own goodness to God’s goodness, as well as our Elder Brother, who learned from the things He suffered.
