Dave Havir, asking whether God really punishes people who do not obey Him, observes that we do receive consequences for our actions. Grace does not eliminate all consequences. God takes vengeance on those who hurt or harm His people. The fact that the God of the Bible will come back in flaming fire will not square with the soft or cheap grace proponents. Righteousness implies acting according to a proper standard. Even though we seek to obey God, we may still have imperfections and blemishes. In thought, word, and deed we have disobeyed all of God’s Ten Commandments. When we obey God, we are cautioned not to feel superior to those around us or to compare ourselves with those among us. We need to realize that obedience is actually a self-rewarding blessing. These laws have been given for our good and our well-being, not so that we can lord our ‘righteousness’ over others. We have to be convinced that obeying God is a self-inherent, self-reinforcing blessing. We are not more righteous than other people; however we may be more blessed than other people.
