J.L. Roden, asking whether we ever encounter items in the scripture for which not enough information is given, suggests that secular history often fills in the gaps and provides additional insights. Secular history helps us to understand (1) why King Herod was troubled, (2) who the wise men were, and (3) why Pontius Pilate wanted to free Jesus rather than to crucify Him. The relatively peaceful time in Judea while Jesus lived was not the norm, but the exception. The Assyrian and Babylonian captivity and exile had taken place, placing many Israelites within the Scythian culture to eventually become allied with the Parthian culture. During this time, the Roman and Parthian empires were perpetually at war with each other, with Rome faring second best most of the time. The Magi were part of the Parthian nobility, formerly at odds with the Roman puppet state, Judea, which was now headed by Herod. Herod may have suspected nefarious warlike motives from these Parthian nobles, causing him to be troubled inwardly, while pretending hospitality and congeniality outwardly. Pilate may have learned about Jesus’ bloodline having been connected to the Parthian civilization, and may have had reluctance to break the detent between Parthia and Rome.
