Reg Killingley, reflecting on a recent trip to Arizona and Nevada in which he detected many potholes on Interstate 40, observed the largest hole in the world—the Grand Canyon. The same elements which create pesky potholes also have combined to fashion this wonder of the world. We have many other metaphorical holes (insecurities, doubts, anxieties, and fears) in our lives that get worse if we do not attend to them. We have the choice to make an existing hole worse or we can make it “whole.” When we encounter a hole, we need to begin filling it before it becomes an abyss, putting the best construction on peoples’ behavior, as Moses had demonstrated as he interceded for his people. If it were up to Satan, we would create a bottomless pit from which there is no return. If it were up to God, we would stand in the gap, preventing further erosion as did the little Dutch boy with his hand in the dike. Like Nehemiah, we must be considered a repairer of walls, filling in gaps and repairing breaches, whether we are talking about human relations or physical objects. Thankfully, Jesus filled in the hole or chasm which separated us from God.
