Dave Havir, following up on the sermon from two weeks ago, asks us about our motivation for obeying God. It is through the proper motivation that we are able to grow. There are at least three legitimate or productive reasons to obey God: We obey (1) to be blessed now, (2) to be blessed at the resurrection, and (3) to willingly honor God now. Healings constitute a blessing we receive right now, indicating that God is a loving parent, desiring us to free ourselves from the consequences of sin. Although blessings do accrue now from obeying God’s laws, so do persecutions and criticism from others. Some of our blessings will not be realized until we are heirs with God at the time of the resurrection, a time when we will be rewarded for regarding the poor and the downcast. Probably the most important motivation to obey God is to willingly honor and serve Him now with passion, cheerfulness, and verve, serving others from the position of a servant, awaiting the ultimate blessing at the day of visitation.
