Dave Havir, beginning with a historical approach to the study of the armor of God, describes how the size of armor changed with the severity of the battle. Eventually, the size of the armor became so enormous that shield bearers had to be employed to carry it. As we are engaged in a spiritual battle, we have to know our adversary, realizing we battle demonic principalities, making physical armor of little or no use. Spiritual armor requires eight necessary parts, including: (1) Truth–that which is true—not limited to a pet set of doctrines. Sometime the truth consists of a candid revelation of our spiritual blind-spots. (2) Integrity—reflected by people striving to do right, even though they may miss the mark occasionally. (3) Peace—derived from keeping God’s law in the spirit as well as the letter. (4) Faith—realizing that we all have gaps or deficits in this important area. God may choose to increase our faith with a difficult or stressful character building experience. (5) Salvation—recalling all the physical and spiritual examples listed in scripture. (6) God’s Word—or the sword of the Spirit, discerning our innermost thoughts, ringing true wherever we hear it. (7) Prayer and supplication—accompanied by periods of fasting for various periods of time. (8) Watching as zealously for Christ or the redemption of Israel as Simeon or Anna had watched the first time (Luke 2:25, 36-38.)
