Bernie Monsalvo, focusing on a popular misconception that the God of the Old Testament was stern and harsh, while the God of the New Testament was kind, gentle, loving and lenient, torpedoes this fallacious notion by ample references to the Bible, revealing that these supposed antithetical personages are one and the same. God’s loving-kindness has been demonstrated throughout the Old Testament from the Psalms through the prophets. Isaiah lavishly praises God’s loving-kindness, mercy, and goodness toward the house of Israel. The term Khesed is used perennially throughout the Mile Coverdale Bible, contrasting God Almighty’s iron-clad faithfulness to mankind’s pitiful attempt at steadfastness. When God makes a covenant with man, he means it, even though Israel was too often faithless. As the Israel of God, we are recipients of Khesed, in which mercy and forgiveness (made possible by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ) is applied to God’s called-out ones. God is characterized by both justice and mercy, prompting Christ to remind the Pharisees not to neglect the weightier matters of the law (justice, mercy, and faith). As children and grandchildren enjoy the unconditional love of parents and grandparents, we enjoy the unconditional love of God, having His laws written in our hearts and receiving His compassion and His mercy, which endure forever.
