Dave Havir, focusing on Philippians 4:8, insists that this message applies to everybody. We are admonished to be positive, though not as Pollyanna airheads. We must remember the positive foundation, remembering why we were born and why we are called. We must also learn to recognize the negative. God has given us a mind to think and meditate, preventing us from being gullible and naïve, not being able to distinguish stupid ideas from brilliant ones, or dangerous from safe events. We cannot gullibly allow people to take advantage of us or lead us into bondage. When we buy a car or a house, we need to learn the worst things about them. Similarly, when we choose a spouse, we need to learn the worst thing about this person and plan accordingly. Jesus Christ wants us to recognize reality, use our heads, and proactively count the cost. While sizing up the realities, we must dwell on the positive, metaphorically adjusting the sails as the wind changes, to reach the destination. While we recognize the negative, we need to dwell on the positive.
