Bernie Monsalvo, reminding us that preparation for the spring holy days are different from the fall holy days, suggests that the self-examination involved in the spring should involve comparing our frail human understanding with God’s immutable truth. Truth does not change, and truth is absolute. The Passover should be an occasion in which God’s children incrementally acquire more of God’s truth than they had accumulated in previous years. The Passover ceremony is the beginning of a new covenant with God. We are responsible before God for what we believe and how we have used His scripture to prove truth. We need to be willing to be corrected and proved wrong by the scriptures, accepting the truth, whatever it may be. We must be circumspect when we reflect upon the deep symbolic significance of the bread and wine emblems of the Passover, carefully discerning Christ’s body, realizing that His body was broken for our healing, and His blood was shed for our sins. Our partaking of the bread and wine confirms our understanding of the annual memorial of Christ’s death, commemorating the time the penalty of our sins has been “passed over.” This year, our examination of ourselves should be more thorough and meaningful than last year.
