George Crow, reflecting on a recent DVD he had seen about the Waldensians entitled Israel of the Alps, suggested that problems in God’s church have been perennial and frequent, with persecutions for keeping God’s Sabbath and laws. The Waldensians, who found refuge in the Alps of central Europe, had a special love for the scriptures, voraciously absorbing its content, and were willing to die for the scriptures, against the fearful persecutions of Rome. We still witness an anti-Bible bias in our culture, though the enemies of the scripture are more apt to twist it rather than burn it. Some teachers will use the tyranny of context to trivialize or marginalize teachings, making them ‘impractical’ to follow in modern times. Another deterrent to rightly dividing the word is an anti-Semitic heresy called hyper-dispensationalism. Scoffield’s and Bullinger’s outlines of dispensationalism seems to make the plan of one peoples’ salvation different from others. Hyper-dispensationalism suggests that the beginning of the church commences with the ministry of Paul, using the epistles only, ushering in the grace alone era (separating the grace-filled church from the law-keeping Jews) ending with the rapture of the church. In this heresy, the church allegedly ‘ must progress beyond the gospels, parables, and primitive dietary laws given to Jews only.’ In reality , we, as God’s called out ones, are obligated to keep the commandments if we want to show our love for God.
