Dave Havir, reminding us that we all have opportunities to exercise leadership in our families, asks us what kind of leader we aspire to become? Gentile leadership emphasizes dominion or dominance over other people. This authoritarian rank and class system is contrasted with Jesus Christ’s servant leadership style in which one humbly seeks to serve others. Paradoxically, the one who aspires to a servant position will be the most effective leader, helping and guiding one another rather than bossing others around. Administrative authority should derive from those who actually are involved in a given assignment or project, serving for the good of all rather than for self-aggrandizement. Unfortunately, many political leaders, who claim to speak for the poor and the downtrodden, are actually on the take, shamelessly arrogating to themselves power, dominion, and authority by extortion, bribery, sleazy backroom deals, and outright corruption. Sadly, some of the leadership in various church groups who presumptuously appropriate to themselves titles of aplomb such as “end time apostle” or “one of the two witnesses” mimic more of the Gentile leadership model than the Christ-inspired servant model, prompted by the loving-kindness of God Almighty. We need to extricate ourselves from the influence of evildoers and join ourselves with our siblings in Christ. As imitators of Jesus Christ, we need to stand for what is right, having core values, helping other people, but not enabling them in their sins, taking care of their legitimate needs.
