Dave Havir, acknowledging that some religions traditionally encourage reading Ecclesiastes during the Feast of Tabernacle, suggests that a parallel case could be made for reading this work during the spring holy day season as well. Both events probe into the meaning of life, unfolding the work in the mode of a lifetime journey, learning as we go. The tone of Ecclesiastes, except for the resounding conclusion, is predominantly pessimistic, reflecting our day-to-day trials. We learn as we make our journey through life that physical life is, for the most part, vanity. Nobody on earth is worthy to take the Passover; we are all works in process. Likewise, no one has the credentials to determine whether somebody else is eligible to take the Passover. God alone has the authority to bring every work into judgment. God’s modus operandi, deriving from a generous supply of mercy and grace, has expectations of us, but tempers it with love and patience. Our pattern of dealing with people should resemble God’s pattern of dealing with His people, with grace, mercy, and forgiveness, allowing for our occasional ups and downs. We should accept His grace and determine to sin no more.
