Reg Killingley, cuing in on I Corinthians 11:29, suggests that paradoxically we often become blunted to a scripture’s significance by familiarity with it. Discerning the body goes beyond recognizing the symbolism of the bread and the wine, but the body refers to the church—the body of Christ. Paul had to chastise the Corinthians for their inability to maintain peace and harmony among themselves, hurting the collective body of Christ. The members of the body are all connected to and dependent upon the rest of the body. We are one body, and each member must seek to edify all of the others. Edifying or building up (whether we are talking about physical buildings, our health, or interpersonal relationships) requires more work than tearing down. The spiritual body can become diseased if we do not discern it properly, looking after and sharing with one another. We must remember that as individual members of Christ’s body, we need one another. If one member suffers, the entire body suffers. If we have unity within the body, we have strength; if we have dissension, the whole body is weakened. The proof of our authenticity as a church is our unity.
