Bernie Monsalvo, reviewing Leviticus 23 and Exodus 12, suggests that God went well beyond showing loving-kindness, concern, mercy, faithfulness, and steadfastness to the children of Israel. In the spring holy days, we have the Passover on the fourteenth day, followed by the First and Last Day of Unleavened Bread. Our hearts should be eager at this time to follow God’s lead. Unfortunately, many of our forbears, inspired by the mixed multitude within, kvetched about the conditions, whining like a bunch of infants, longing for the victuals of Egypt. We need to leave sin behind, never again desiring to go back, being vigilant and watchful that we continually put out sin, realizing that God has extended mercy and loving-kindness toward us, giving His only Son for us when we were still sinners. Unlike our forebears, influenced by peer pressure and carnal appetites, we must yield to God’s leadership. Like Moses, we must have an intercessory attitude toward our brethren in physical and spiritual Israel, incorporating God’s loving-kindness and mercy. The Passover is “a memorial” of the death of Jesus Christ, while “the Feast” is a reference to “the Feast of Unleavened Bread,” representing a time God extended His love toward us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). Let us keep the feast with renewed understanding.
