Dave Havir, reminding us that the Days of Unleavened Bread focus on the deliverance from bondage, emphasizes that the magnitude of the New Testament fulfillment of the release from bondage is even more exciting than the actual exodus out of Egypt. The physical act of removing leaven is the memorial of God’s deliverance and our reaction to grace. Removing leaven is not the “focus” of the Days of Unleavened Bread, but instead the symbolic reaction to grace and the Passover deliverance. We should not be hung up on the legalistic obsession with crumbs. Real grace (not cheap grace) comes with expectations and obligations; we are God’s workmanship created for good works. It makes no sense to go without leavening, but not break the bonds of sin, continuing in strife and wickedness. Eating unleavened bread symbolizes the urgency of leaving sin now (in haste) rather than dilly dallying around until later. The Old Testament bread rituals ought to remind us of the New Testament fulfillment–the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
