Dave Havir, cuing in on Proverbs 6:16-19 as well as Dr. Henry Cloud’s book, Nine Things You Simply Must Do, asks the question: “Why does God hate sin?” Henry Cloud suggests that there is a way of “hating well,” adding that what we hate defines us just as much as what we love. God hates arrogance, lying, scheming, sowing discord, etc. The things that God hate constitute what Satan does; the things that God loves constitute what Christ does. Repenting is not just saying one is sorry, but a wholesale changing of behaviors which enable this sin. Hate moves to destroy bad things, cleansing the world of evil, enabling good to thrive. Hate is part of the immune system of the soul. God hates sin because sin separates people from Him, separates people from each other, including heretofore close family members. The antidote to this separation is to embrace the great commandment, loving God with all our might and heart and our neighbor as ourselves.
