Reg Killingley, giving a prequel to his last message on “discerning the Body,” suggests that the instructions for keeping the Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread were given to the community, emphasizing sharing and looking after one another’s needs. Earlier Abraham had been called out of his community, but now the “called out” ones were called back into a community. Unfortunately, the children of Israel engaged in a perpetual internecine fussing, fighting, and feuding for 40 long years, incrementally wearing down God’s patience. I Corinthians 10 stated that all this kvetching was recorded for us (the Israel of God) as a lesson to us not to repeat their behaviors (idolatry, fornication, grumbling, lusting, and bickering) in the New Covenant. The Ten Commandments were given to safeguard the relationship between ourselves and God, as well as ourselves and the community of mankind. In a community setting, we are obligated to think about one another. Summing up the entire Decalogue, we are to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves.
