Dave Havir, cuing in on Matthew 16:6-16, explores Christ’s metaphorical comment about the leavening of the Pharisees, referring to the doctrine of the Pharisees, Essenes, Sadducees, Zealots, and Herodians. The Zealots expressed civil dissent by breaking the law and engaging in terrorist acts. The wealthy Sadducees, priests in charge of the Temple, accepted only the Torah with a literal interpretation of the law, while the middle class Pharisees, scribes, and lawyers of religion accepted the prophets and writings as well, seeking to liberalize teachings by amended tradition and oral laws. The Sadducees, fearful of the influence of Christianity, applied heavy-handed threats like throwing the disciples in prison to stop them from preaching. Unfortunately, some of the doctrines of the Sadducees (refusal to believe in the Resurrection) had influenced members of the Corinthian church. Pharisees who had converted to Christianity convinced some members of the New Testament that some physical rites (such as circumcision) were required for salvation. Jesus Christ rebuffed the leaven of the Herodians, diffusing any civil disobedience through withholding taxes, the leaven of the Sadducees, diffusing their attempt to trick Him into making some illogical statements about marriage following the resurrection, the leaven of the Pharisees, diffusing speculation about which constituted the greatest commandment, reminding them that love toward God coupled with love toward man fulfills the whole law. We need to be aware of the leaven of false doctrine, no matter what the source may be.
