Dave Havir, reflecting on Matthew 19:16-22, asserts that we support the Ten Commandments and more, giving extra measure. The Ten Commandments is the foundation, but there is more. Salvation is tailor-made for each us. In the case of the rich young man, trust in wealth was perhaps a weak point in his character, something that has been programmed from his youth. Some people have erroneously concluded that the fourth commandment is the only test commandment, or perhaps the most important commandment. Actually, all of us have different weak points. To some people, the Sabbath would not be a test or proof of their faithfulness. Other people may be tempted to grumble, commit adultery, get bitter, or envy, while others may feel tempted to practice idolatry. The correction in Isaiah 1:11was not whether or not to keep the Sabbath, but instead addressed aberrant behaviors on the Sabbath, exalting form over substance. God was not throwing out the Sabbath, but rather He addressed the improper keeping of the commandments, or the substituting of their own assemblies for God’s Holy Days. The way something is done is more important than what is done. Our goal is to keep the whole law, not favoring one tenet above the other. The patriarchs, the first fruits, and the faithful witnesses in Hebrews 13 all had terrible weaknesses. We can actually learn from their mistakes not to practice the same things. All of us have different special lessons God wants us to learn.
