Tony Stith, suggesting that we may not properly reflect on the days between the Days of Unleavened Bread and Pentecost, reminds us that for the early disciples, this period of time changed their lives forever, totally disrupting their routine. The world must have seemed a pretty dark place to them, forcing them to stay under the radar, not wanting to show their light. Today, as Christians are targeted, we may also want to stay under the radar. Some may want to blend into the culture, while others want to cloister themselves into segregated communities. Both responses have the undesirable consequences of dimming the light. The protagonist Macon Leary in the 1988 movie, The Accidental Tourist, a travel writer who tried to give people tips on avoiding hassle, learned that the more he tried to avoid hassle, the more predicaments would befall him, leading to unintended consequences. Eventually, Leary had to come to terms with this tendency to crawl into a cocoon, learning how to become sensitive and social again. As this world gets more dangerous, we, as Christians, cannot detach ourselves, crawling into a cocoon, avoiding the hassles of being a witness. Unfortunately, a poll conducted by the Barna Group, indicated that the lifestyles of committed Christians, in the eyes of non-Christians, did not appear to be any different from the rest of the world. If we are committed Christians, our lights must shine continually by our example, attitude, and encouragement, demonstrating our witness as much by what we are for as what we are against. The world desperately needs and craves the light that we are able to radiate. Our good works, empowered by God’s Holy Spirit, will glorify God Almighty.
