This sermon was originally given as two parts. Both halves have been combined into a single message. Dave Havir, focusing on II Timothy 2:19, suggests that while this epistle is directed against false doctrine, it provides encouragement for many areas of life. Paul encourages all of us to shore up our foundations, spiritually, economically, and psychologically, realizing that the Lord knows them that are His. God has identified His first fruits by placing His Spirit into them; having God’s Spirit identifies us as His. If we have God’s Spirit, we are members of the spiritual organism—God’s church. Because the Lord knows who are His, we have no business assessing another person’s spirituality or estimating his relationship with God. We can make an assessment of behavior, but we cannot assess a person’s relationship with God. We will ultimately know people by their fruits, but we have often made mistakes about people in the past, and we dare not judge anything before its time. While our responsibility as Christians is to depart from iniquity, it is not easy to get away from people or the influences of the culture, or our own human nature, for that matter. We must learn to control our carnal human nature, overcoming evil with good, displacing bitterness with the kindness and forgiveness of God and putting on the new man. |
