Dave Havir, continuing on the topic of the value of studying, focuses on learning from experience, suggesting that most of our permanent life lessons come from the bruises and scratches of daily life. When we experience consequences from our mistakes, we learn faster; if we shield our offspring or our students from consequences, we will stunt their maturity. As we grow up, we learn from our successes, mistakes, sins, seeing ourselves, and partaking in Christ’s sufferings. We learn from encountering and mastering obstacles incrementally. The childbirth process is an effective analogy of learning through pain. We learn valuable lessons from mistakes, as had Abraham and Sarah, designated as people of faith. We learn from our sins not to critically judge or condemn other people, showing mercy to those that mess up, developing the capacity to counsel other people empathetically with a spirit of meekness. We need to look into God’s law as a mirror seeing how closely we correspond to God’s standards. We grow exponentially as we learn to partake of Christ’s sufferings, the greatest way of learning from experience.
