Dave Havir, focusing on the power of cultural conditioning, reflects on Lot’s willingness to compromise on morality by offering his two daughters into fornication to prevent violation of his guests. Like Lot, all of us are influenced, or have been influenced, by our culture. Today, a civil war of ideas is taking place, including the influence of constructivism and denying any standards, claiming the rightness or wrongness of anything is in the eye of the beholder. These ideas are destined to be deconstructed and replaced by the construction of others. The overblown influence of mass media has encouraged a kind of glibness and symbol over substance. Unfortunately, unscrupulous propagandists are at work rewriting history and calling evil good; global warming is a bogus issue transformed into the truth by misguided zealots. The media establishment is totally distorting the Arizona immigration law, the healthcare debate, and other political issues. Church organizations attempt to rewrite history in order to put the best light on themselves and to disparage other groups. Marital disputes generate competing views of reality. Our view of God, rightly or wrongly, is largely shaped by our imaginations. Our relationships with other people are rightly or wrongly shaped by the reconstruction and deconstruction of our imaginations. If we do not have a rock solid love of the truth, we will be deceived by strong delusion. When we hear stories about other people, we should allow for the possibility that truth has been distorted. The best source of the truth comes from God and God’s Word. We need to resist the conditioning of our culture, being wise as serpents, but harmless as doves.
