David Havir, focusing on the baptism described in Acts 2, asks why this baptism was so dramatic. The events in this situation seemed to have a time-specific application, not something to recur in later times. This giving of the Holy Spirit did not occur in the temple, but in a private residence in an upper room. God was beginning to show people that the spiritual temple is more important than the physical temple. Some have erroneously assumed that the speaking in tongues was a manifestation of the baptism of fire. From the context of the chapter, it becomes clear that the miracle of tongues was a time-specific miracle and involved actual spoken languages rather than gibberish or glossolia. God allowed the Holy Spirit to come upon people before they were baptized. We should desire the baptism of water and the Holy Spirit, but not the baptism of fire described in Matthew 3:10-12 as the destruction of the wicked. When we are asked whether a miracle is or is not from God, we must judge nothing before its time. On the other hand, we need to exercise our minds, verifying in the manner of the apostle Thomas. We are not to gullibly accept “new prophetic truth” without thorough rigorous examination. God will eventually make everything clear. Regarding health, political, or other marginal issues, we need to safeguard other people’s consciences. We can be people of conviction and still love each other.
