Dave Havir, focusing upon the faithful promises of God, reminds us that faith and hope are important and inextricably related. The essence of faith constitutes believing what God says. Faith is more head knowledge, while hope appeals more to the heart. Hope denotes our heart’s desire. We have hope in the resurrection. Unfortunately, our politicians flood us with empty promises, but are slaves of corruption and lies. Having our eye on the world should lead us to sigh and cry for the abominations, repenting and extricating ourselves from the corrupt Babylonish system in which we live. We need to be establishing an intimate relationship with God, being bold and frank in our prayers. We also need to learn the lessons from our foolish sins, facing and living with the consequences of our behavior. We need to learn to obey God, not in order to impress Him with goodness, but because obedience is good for us. Whatever we have had to “give up” for God’s truth will pale into insignificance when we receive our rewards. The way of escape from our trials may occur through a miracle, through death, through hiding, through leaving, or through coping. God’s perspective on time may seem considerably different from ours, but we realize that He will never leave us.
