J. L. Roden focuses on the role and accomplishments of Moses of founding a nation of the Hebrew people, freeing them, giving them a codified law, correcting them, interceding for them, setting up a judicial system, and serving as a prophet, forecasting their future and destiny. The American Pilgrims, under the leadership of William Bradford, found parallels to our forebear’s experience on the Sinai. The preaching of George Whitfield also had parallels to the preaching of Moses. The founding fathers of America (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Adams, and Franklin) modeled their governmental and judicial system on the principles Moses had given to ancient Israel. As Moses did not get to see the Promised Land, many of our founding fathers, undergoing many frustrations and disappointments, did not see their plans come to fruition. America’s founding fathers derived from the teachings of Moses courage to flee oppression, the intricate relationship between freedom and law, and the generosity and big heartedness to welcome and assimilate strangers and outsiders, admonishing them to accept freedom coupled with responsibility.
