James Ross, addressing the problem of miscommunication, affirms that communication is the foundation of every aspect of our lives; communication is to a relationship as love is to the body. When a man cannot communicate with his wife, or a wife cannot communicate with her husband, they are alone. Communication is the ability to talk our fears and problems without the fear of the other person. There are five layers of communication, beginning with (Level 5) cliché ridden phatic communion, (Level 4) reports from others or gossip [Whenever we are tempted to gossip, we should ask ourselves (a) Is it true? (b) Will it benefit everyone by my telling it? (c) Do I have positive motives for saying it? And (d) Will it bring glory to God?], (Level 3) cautious sharing of some of our feelings–more at attending behavior, (Level 2) communicating our real feelings or emotions—gut level communication, and (Level 1) peak level or baring the soul, sincere, absolute transparent level, exemplified by Jesus Christ’s communication with His disciples that He was going to die. This is the level that we must maintain our relationship with God. We must have fully developed empathy when we communicate on this level. Jesus Christ, having lived as a human being, undergoing all the pains we have gone through, has attained this level of communication; for all of us, He has been there, done that. We need to walk a mile in somebody else’s moccasins before we judge them. We need to understand the communication of compassion which transcends words.
