Neil McIver, focusing on the parable of the sower in Mark 4:1-20, examines the three varieties of soil: stony, thorny, and fertile, depicting the receptivity toward God’s Word. Jesus used parables, having enough grounds of comparison to shed meaning on one underlying truth. The imagery of the parable would be clear to the initiated, but unclear to the uninitiated or the looky-loo. Parables require people to think in order to glean what the speaker had prepared for them. The parable of the sower was given to the public and later interpreted and explained for the disciples. The sower depicts someone who teaches the Word of God. The seed is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. All the seed was good, but not all the soils (hearts or minds receiving God’s Word) were equally productive. Some soil is impenetrable, indicating a calloused, cynical, emotional, or shallow attitude toward the incoming seed. The thorny soil represents the carnal, lustful pulls or worldly interests that compete for and choke out the seed. The productive soil has been plowed and tilled, indicating that work was expended on repentance and overcoming. The cultivated ground (depicting a converted heart) is the only ground which will bounteously yield fruit.
