Reginald Killingley, reflecting on Yogi Berra’s advice from his father, “Until you’ve got something to say, don’t say nuthin,” appraises this advice as sound and useful. Yogi added that he spoke very little, but when he did, it merited headlines. He claimed that he only spoke if it added value to the conversation. Unfortunately, much of our media conversation today is adversarial or confrontational. Jesus Christ informed the Pharisees that, from the beginning, God did not intend adversarial relationships, either in nature or in the human marriage relationship. In the days of creation all was in harmony without a clue of disharmony. When the Adversary, the father of liars, appeared, things started to change drastically, with disruption and destruction following disruption and destruction, beginning with the temptation of mother Eve. This event led to the blame game, self-justification, adversarial relationships, and curses upon the earth. We look forward to the Millennium, when swords shall be forged into plowshares and adversarial relationships will disappear as the knowledge of the Lord covers the earth. We should live our lives now anticipating this non-adversarial approach, conquering our prejudices and biases and bridling our thoughtless words. Jesus admonished us to love our enemies even though they do not reciprocate, transcending adversarial relationships.
